Quick Hits on a Lazy Sunday

  • Interesting news out of Sunrise, Florida. Hugh Jessiman will dress for his first NHL game tonight. Jessiman is the last first rounder of 2003 to play in the NHL (he was the Rangers' 12th overall pick). This will surely be hockey trivia one day. "Who suited up for Florida in 2011 to become the last first rounder of 2003 to play an NHL game?"  Way to ruin all of our Hugh Jessiman jokes, Florida.
  • After a pathetic effort in Ottawa last night, the Philadelphia Flyers have a few questions to answer internally. First, Nik Zherdev played his most defensive conscious effort of the year. Even the coach acknowledged that he put in the effort. What becomes of him? Will he be ordered back to the press box on Thursday? Will he even make it past Monday (deadline day) without being sent to the AHL for cap room?
Another question is does the team need a shake up? They look complacent at times and even bored. They have had their worse month of the season in February and have failed to put together a full game effort. They have squandered huge leads and have had solid goaltending followed by soft goals. A trade may be on the horizon, especially since the GM and coach said the team needed an attitude adjustment. That was before the Ottawa debacle so I imagine Holmgren is not too happy. He has cap room and has never been afraid to pull the trigger. I doubt he remains quiet on Monday.
  • Rumors have Dallas C Brad Richards being shopped hard. New York Rangers and LA seem to be the favorites. Also an unreliable source has tied the New York Islanders to Atlanta's Zach Bogosian. I doubt that Atlanta will move Bogosian, who is a top D to be, however if GM Garth Snow wants to part with a top 6 roster forward and a good prospect, ATL may just entertain.
